How to make a knitted wire Valentine heart - A Free Knitted Wire Jewelry Pattern

How do you make knitted wire jewelry?  Some of my jewelry making friends asked.

So I decided to show what I know in this post.

I love to knit and I love to make jewelry using quality gemstones and all kinds of beads.  So one Christmas when I got a book about knitting with wire, I just took off.  I got hooked into making knitted wire jewelry.

There are several good books on this topic but this was the first book that inspired me.   I am not any affiliate of this author or amazon. No monetary gain,   I mention it because I have it and learned from it.

As Joyce Goodman says,  it's a good idea to start with wooden double point needles and coated copper wire, like the artistic wire. Later,  I have experimented with all kinds of wire, sterling silver, copper, and gold filled wire and now I like metal double point needles better than the wooden ones.

For knitted wire designs all you need to know is - how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off.

Knitting with wire is a little different from knitting with yarn in the sense that  the properties of yarn and wire are different.  Wire knitting may not feel as soft, smooth and quick like knitting with yarn.  There is a difference in  muscle movement and it may feel tedious at least in the beginning.

But if you like the lacy, dainty filigree look of the knitted wire  jewelry, you'll get hooked.

Enough talking, now I'll show how i knit with wire.

Materials needed:

*Knitting needles size 4 US,  in this particular one- I used double point ones and metal.

*Wire -   28g or 30 g artistic silver tone wire.  I have also used sterling silver and gold filled wire in some projects but not thinner than 30g.  It tends to kink and break.

*Tiny 2 mm garnet gemstone beads

* One hessonite garnet briolette 6 mm

* Flush cutter

Procedure:

1. String 26 garnet beads in the wire. Put the wire  roll in a zip loc bag

Note - here I have the round nose and the chain nose pliers too because I extended this project to making a book mark.  For making the pendant you may not need them.

2. Cast on 6 stitches.

3. Next row knit with beads, meaning slide one bead, knit. Slide one bead, knit - all 6 stitches.

4. Next row- just knit without beads.

5. Next row - Knit with bead like row 2  ( You may knit randomly, meaning skipping a bead in some stitches and so on to give it a free form look if you want ).

6. Next row - knit without beads.  Every now and then stretch the knitted piece ( or rather block it )

7. Go  on in this fashion until all the beads are gone,  knit the last bead  ( that is the briolette.)

8.  Bind off. Cut the wire from the knitted piece.

9. Now with your fingers  give this a heart shape.  Here comes the fun part knitting with wire.  You can sculpt the piece as you like because wire gives you that freedom that yarn can not.

Voila! Your knitted wire jewelry pendant is done.

10.  Depending on what you make,  you have to think about your finishing.  Add a jump ring to make it a pendant or add some beads like I did here,  to make it a book mark

How to make the The Tree Of Life Pendant

TREE OF LIFE PENDANT

Recently, with the new born baby on my lap,   the image of the Tree of Life comes to my mind's eye..   Trees have such  a rich symbolic history in so  many cultures.

The cherry tree blossoms in Japanese culture, from the Celtic to the African culture,  trees are symbols of our lives in a strange way.  The branches spread their limbs for the blessings reaching up  to the heavens, and  the  roots  go  down deeper and curl in  Mother Earth's bosom .

For me, whenever I think of stability and strength I envision the Tree of Life.

This made me go deeper into the meaning of it, as if the tree of life  shows how to dwell in all the worlds, how to unite the worlds above and below.  All these emotions made me research more into how to make  a Tree of Life pendant.  As a jewelry artist that is what I wanted to do now!

I found that there are several nice You Tube demonstrations.

Tree of Life Pendant by Camille Sharon

Tree of Life by Magpie Gemstone.com

I followed mostly  Sharon's instruction  but also  changed a little bit in the process .

My mom  had told  me long ago that I have trouble following directions and it is so true.  So,  some day soon I may probably write a tutorial to show how I did it.

Try it.  It is not very hard.  In the beginning it took me like an hour to do the first one, then I could make them in forty minutes or so.

In case you don't have the time but  need a Tree of Life pendant right now,  perhaps  to give an August born a birthday  present,  the Peridot in copper Tree of Life Pendant  is available in my Etsy store, freshly made. If you like it and want it with other stones or metal  I'd gladly do it.

Here are the other  Tree of Life Pendants I made. .

A tutorial on Herring bone wire wrap style with a twist - the caged herring bone wire work earring

Herring bone wire work
I learned the caged herringbone style of wire work this weekend.  In fact, it started from Friday night after dinner.  I was so engrossed that I did not know when it turned 2:38 in my digital clock! So it is Saturday now!

I wasted a lot of wire.  No problem with the tutorial, Mei  was excellent with her direction, it is just me.  I tried with various gauge wire and found the most obedient, nice and pretty one for my fingers  was my 26 g art wire.  I also used some real silver and gold filled wire, for people who only care for the real stuff.

Yes, I learned this technique from a tutorial by Mei  .  She is just wonderful.  I knew how to do the herringbone style before.  But Mei pointed out a very important thing in this tutorial and actually that is the crucial part.  In normal  herring bone style  the 24  wire ( thinner) goes in front of   the 20 g wire (thicker),  in caged herring bone, it goes back and forth, once behind the 20 g and in the   the next step it reverses, meaning the 24 g goes in front of the 20 g.  The point is in normal herring bone style I was doing a bit differently before, now I learned some thing very important doing this tutorial and  my coils look much cleaner.

I am so greatful to her, and also to this age, when you can learn from the top mentors of the world.  We are all connected with this incredible net!

So here are my little pieces.  Some of them are going to my etsy store too.

How to Make a Wire Wrapped Earring for Valentine Day ( a Tutorial)

How to make a wire wrapped earring for Valentine

I made this wire wrapped earrings by weaving wire and using swarovski crystals and garnet beads.

I got so carried away that I made quite a few pairs with different colors and sizes. The thing I learned that you have to keep the inside circle beads smaller than the outer circle beads. You’ll know what I mean when I show you the tutorial.

Materials used:

15 pieces of 4 mm pink swarovski bicones (Fire Mountain Gem H – 20- 9757 CY)
5 pieces of 3 mm size garnet beads (Fire Mountain Gem H-20-6917 KX)
28 g silver plated wire (Fire Mountain Gem H-20-1451WR)
2 French sterling silver ear hooks (Fire Mountain Gem H-20-4902FN)
2 heart silver beads (from Just Bead It, my neighborhood beading store)

I have no monetary affiliation with any of these stores. I am giving the reference because these are what I have used.

Tool needed:

Round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush cutter.

Procedure:

Cut the wire to a length of 12” (30 cm)
Bring the two sides of the wires closer with both hands.

String two pink bicones at the left hand side wire.
String one garnet bead at the right hand side wire.

String another pink bicone at the left side wire.
Pass the right hand side wire through this pink bead.
Pull tight.

String two pink bicones at the left hand side wire.
String one garnet bead at the right hand side wire.
String another pink bicone at the left side wire.
Pass the right hand side wire through this pink bead.
Just like last time.
Pull tight.

In the same way string all the remaining garnet and pink bicone beads, each time pulling tight so that it forms a nice circular shape and the wire does not show.

Now let the right hand side wire go through the closest left side bicone bead. Pull tight.

With the fingers of your non dominant hand hold it tight, close the gap if there is any. Now gradually twist the two wires to a single twisted wire. Twist quite a few revolutions. I did about ten or twelve until you have it nice and tight and also enough length (like a couple of inches)

String the heart bead now.

Cut off excess wire.

Cut off excess wire.

Insert it into the French ear hook loop.

Make another one to complete the pair.

Voila! Your Valentine earring is done.
